The Anatomy of a Search Engine

In this paper, we present Google, a prototype of a large-scale search engine which makes heavy use of the structure present in hypertext. Google is designed to crawl and index the Web efficiently and produce much more satisfying search results than existing systems. The prototype with a full text and hyperlink database of at least 24 million pages is available at http://google.stanford.edu/

Google Sync End of Life

Starting January 30, 2012, users, other than paid Google Apps users, won't be able to set up new devices using Google Sync and should see our sync site for instructions. [Revealing. The source has a link to instructions on the new way of syncing, but does not have a link selling Google Apps. Also I might be an anachronism, but I feel this is incredibly user hostile.]

Marissa Mayer: Why Google Maps is far ahead on Android - YouTube

(From about 1:35)
MM: "[...] And those are things and innovations we're able to build [...] because we have more freedom and flexibility there. And we do really like Android as a platform and Google Maps for Mobile by far shines the most on Android because we can do so much more with features. Similarly indoor maps: Android is the platform that we're able to launch that on.

"Is the idea though to do it on Android first and hopefully matriculate it out to other platforms?"

MM: "Well it certainly is the case that we love to showcase these new technologies and things that we can do on Google Maps for Mobile and the platform that we have the most flexibility with is Android. If you look at Google Maps for Mobile it is far ahead on Android."

(I hear 'Android is the platform we're able to launch that on' and 'the platform we have the most flexibility with is Android' and wonder if by able and flexibility, she is implying more of 'in a business sense' than from an exclusively software development perspective.)

Google Won't Replace Marissa Mayer

New Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer won’t be directly replaced at Google, where until Monday she was VP of local, maps and location services. Mayer’s duties will be filled by her lieutenants, according to two sources with knowledge of the organization. Mayer’s product list included Google Maps, Google Earth, Zagat, Street View and local search for both desktop and mobile. She is handing off those responsibilities on short notice, after abruptly resigning today.

Vancouver Data Blog by Neil McGuigan: Web scraping with Google Spreadsheets and XPath

In this first video, I show how to grab parts of a web page (scraping) using Google Docs Spreadsheets and XPath. Google Spreadsheets has a nice function called importXML which will read in a web page. You can then apply an XPath to that page, to grab various parts of it, such as one particular value, or all of the hyperlinks. This is a convenient method, as your data will be in a format that is easily downloadable in Excel.

Google - public data

The Google Public Data Explorer makes large datasets easy to explore, visualize and communicate. As the charts and maps animate over time, the changes in the world become easier to understand. You don't have to be a data expert to navigate between different views, make your own comparisons, and share your findings.

Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Handling legitimate cross-domain content duplication

We've recently discussed several ways of handling duplicate content on a single website; today we'll look at ways of handling similar duplication across different websites, across different domains. For some sites, there are legitimate reasons to duplicate content across different websites — for instance, to migrate to a new domain name using a web server that cannot create server-side redirects.

Search your bookshelf with a $65 barcode scanner

Why would you record which books you own in the first place? The immediate reason is that you can run full-text searches against the books in your library. That’s right: just by scanning bar codes, you can search over the text of books you own.

If you have a blog, you can use the same trick to embed RSS feeds in web pages. The Google Docs approach is preferred over Flash or Javascript widgets because here you have complete control over the presentation layout and formatting of content.
