My Ultimate Developer and Power Users Tool List for Mac OS X (2012 Edition)

This is the fourth installment of my must have must have list of tools and utilities as a Mac and iOS developer (2009, 2010, 2011). A lot can change in twelve months when you work in the technology space. The biggest change for Apple developers each year are the platform updates. This year saw the transition from iOS 5 to 6 as well as Lion turning into a more powerful Mountain Lion.

TextMate Blog » HTML output for commands

As you probably know, TextMate derives a lot of power from the underlying shell infrastructure in OS X. A place where this is evident is in the bundle editor, which allow you to (amongst others) setup (shell) commands and scripts to run.

AFP548 - launchd in Depth

When launchd scans a folder, or a job is submitted with launchctl, it depends on a properly formatted plist file that describes the job to be run. This is, for most sysadmins, is the most difficult area of launchd to grasp. SystemStarter used simple shell scripts to launch daemons. launchd requires the admin to be able to properly format an XML file and while not exceedingly difficult, it can be confusing.

ImageSnap: Capture images from iSight and other sources from the command line

ImageSnap is a Public Domain command-line tool that lets you capture still images from an iSight or other video source. You might remember Axel Bauer's original isightcapture tool (that is no longer supported but still works on most systems). With ImageSnap I hope we'll be able to move forward and add features, adapt to the ever-changing Apple architectures, etc.

Joel Mama’s Blog » Using a Mac .dfont on Windows

I was able to use a Mac OS X “.dfont” font file on windows by using a simple FOSS software to convert it into standard TrueType format (.ttf). The app is called Fondu. It’s actually a set of many command line programs rolled into one, but I only used the main fondu app. Couldn’t have been easier:

Finally, the Quicksilver is back in my Snow Leopard faster than ever! I’m disabling Google Quick Search Box for now. B56a7 will work on your Snow Leopard machine, but most of the features won’t play well on it or slow. [When I upgrade, I guess I might never use Quicksilver again. :_(]
